What makes a good piece of flash fiction?
Flash fiction is a complete story told in 1,000 words or fewer. The length leaves no room for warm-up, so strong flash does four things at once:
- Starts late. Open inside the moment of change, not before it. That is in medias res.
- Trusts one image. One precise detail (a filled oil lamp on a sill) does the work of a paragraph of description.
- Turns. Something shifts: a decision, a revelation, a reversal. No turn, no story.
- Leaves an echo. The ending resonates rather than explains. Often it mirrors the first line.
The generator is built on those rules. Use it the way you would use a sparring partner: generate, then pull the story apart. Where is the turn? Which sentences could go? Our guide to flash fiction covers the forms and word counts in detail.

Questions writers ask
Is the flash fiction generator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no account. A fair-use limit of about 20 stories per hour per visitor keeps it free for everyone.
How long are the generated stories?
Anywhere from 50 to 1,000 words, which covers every flash form: the 50-word dribble, the 100-word drabble, microfiction up to about 300 words and classic flash up to 1,000.
Can I give the AI my own idea or first line?
Yes. Add a premise in "Your idea" and, optionally, an opening line. The story will start with your exact line. You can grab a line from the opening line generator.
Who owns the stories?
We do not store your stories on our servers. Treat AI output as a draft or exercise: rewrite it in your own voice before submitting anywhere, and check each magazine's policy, since many do not accept AI-generated work.
What does the structure option do?
It asks the model to shape the story on a named plot structure, such as kishōtenketsu or the Fichtean Curve. Each one has an interactive diagram on this site so you can see how the beats were placed.
How do I create my own short story?
Start with one character who wants something specific, put one obstacle in the way, and decide the ending before you write. Our prompt and plot generators give you the first two; the story ending generator helps with the third. Then draft fast and cut by a third.
Is it good for learning to write?
Use it to study, not to replace practice: generate a story, then compare it with the structure diagram, cut it by 30%, or rewrite the ending. The writing pads for six-word stories, drabbles and microfiction give feedback on your own drafts.
