The Hero's Journey: 12 Steps
Joseph Campbell called it the monomyth: a pattern he found in myths worldwide. Hollywood story consultant Christopher Vogler condensed Campbell's 17 stages into the 12 most writers use today. The journey is a circle: the hero leaves the ordinary world, crosses into a special world, and comes back with something that changes both.

Ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting the mentor, crossing the threshold, tests/allies/enemies, approach to the inmost cave, the ordeal, reward, the road back, resurrection and return with the elixir (Vogler's version).
Who created the Hero's Journey?
Joseph Campbell described the monomyth in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). Christopher Vogler's 1992 book The Writer's Journey adapted it into the 12 steps screenwriters use.
